Superhydrophilic Polyurethane Coatings

Patent Title: HYDROPHILIC ANTI-FOG COATINGS

 Number/Link: US2015/0344725

Applicant/Assignee: InnoSense

Publication date: 3-12-2015

Gist”: A hydrophilic anti-fog coating is pepared by incorporating silica particles  and organosilicate micelles

Why it is interesting: A superhydrophilic coating composition is made from a polyurethane prepolymer together with 1-5% (w/w) of a ~30nm monodisperse colloidal silica and up to 10% (v/v) of organosilicate micelles having a hydrophilic porous ‘shell’ and a (pref.) hydrophilic ‘core’, all in a solvent. The composition is said to be especially useful for anti-fog coatings on optically-clear plastic substrates (polycarbonate, polyurethane, polyester..).  According to the theory the porous shell of the micelles draws water away from the coated surface while the micelle cores act as a water reservoir.  Very clever.

TPU from Asymmetric Chain Extenders

Patent Title: THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE

 Number/Link: WO2015/173337

Applicant/Assignee: Henkel

Publication date: 19-11-2015

Gist”: TPU is made using diols with 1 prim- and one sec-OH group

Why it is interesting: Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) have many desirable properties but are notoriously difficult to process: they need a high processing temperature (>160°C ) and have a high melt viscosity requiring high shear processing equipment. According to the current invention the melt viscosity can be greatly reduced by using an asymmetric diol as chain extender (i.e. with one pimary and one secondary hydroxyl group) instead of a conventional symmetric diol. In the examples polyester-MDI TPUs extended with asymmetric diols (e.g. 1,3-butanediol or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol)  are shown to have a much lower melt viscosity compared to TPU extended with 1,4-butanediol. These TPUs are especially useful as hotmelt adhesives.

UV Crosslinkable TPU

Title: BREATHABLE AND CROSSLINKABLE THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE

 Number/Link:  WO2015/164695

Applicant/Assignee: Lubrizol

Publication date: 29-10-2015

Gist”: TPU composition containing unsaturated polyester diol and long chain monol

Why it is interesting: A soft, plasticizer-free, TPU with low processing temperature and curable by UV light can be produced by incorporating an unsaturated polyester diol and a linear C20-C65 monol. The unsaturated polyester can e.g. be prepared from butanediol, adipic acid and some trimethylolpropane monallylether.  The TPU is said to be especially useful as UV curable adhesive for fabrics.
