“Gist”: Ice repellent polyurethane coatings are prepared by incorporating F-POSS prepolymers

Why it is interesting: The invention is about coated surfaces that show reduced ice formation and/or adhesion. This is accomplished by incorporating fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (F-POSS) into the composition. OH-functional F-POSS is prepared as per the scheme below, which is then reacted with polyisocyanates to prepare an NCO-functional F-POSS prepolymer.  The prepolymer can then be used in PU coating compositions, or reacted with amino-functional PDMS compounds and used as an additive in coating compositions.
It is believed that the F-POSS particles interfere with H-bond formation of ice to the coated surface.  Ice repellent surfaces are particularly useful for aircraft, wind turbines, cooling equipment and the like.

“Gist”: Aqueous dispersion of a hydrazide-extended  TPU can be sprayed as aerosol to make protective films

Why it is interesting: An aqueous thermoplastic polyurethane dispersion is prepared from a non-yellowing diisocyanate, e.g. bis(4-isocyanatocyclohexyl), a diol (e.g. PPG2000), a difunctional hydrazine or hydrazide chain extender (e.g. 1,3-diaminourea) and a water solubilizing compound (e.g. dimethylolpropionic acid).  Together with a propellant the, composition is shelf-stable and can be aerosol-sprayed to form clear, non-yellowing protective films.

Thiol-Crosslinked Poly(hydroxyurethanes)

Title: METHOD FOR PRODUCING OR CURING POLYMERS USING THIOL-ENE POLYADDITION REACTIONS

“Gist”: Unsaturated PHU are crosslinked using polythiols

Why it is interesting: The invention is about poly(hydroxyurethanes) (PHU) containing alkylene groups that are crosslinked using thiol-ene ‘click’ polyaddition reactions. The unsaturated PHU are first prepared by aminolysis of cyclocarbonates using unsaturated amines. In an example di-trimethylolpropane is converted to di-trimethylolpropanedicarbonate using ethylchloroformiate.  The di-TMPDC is then reacted with 3-aminopropylvinylether to prepare the PHU, which is then crosslinked using pentaerithritol-tetra(3-mecaptopropionate) in the presence of a photoinitiator and UV light.  The invention is said to be useful for isocyanate-free adhesive- and coating systems.
