Gist”: Highly damping flexible foams are made using a mixture of three specific polyols.

Why it is interesting: “Visco” or “memory” foams are currently known especially for their use in matresses and pillows.  Originally however these “dead” foams were developed as vibration damping materials for acoustic applications. The invention is based on the use of three specific polyols: (a) a ‘normal’ PO/EO-tipped triol with a hydroxyl value of about 28, (b) a ‘rigid’ all-PO triol with OHv of about 350 and (c) a ‘high EO’ triol with an EO content of about 75% and OHv of 36. The polyols are used in a ratio of about 25:15:60 (a:b:c) together with either TDI or MDI. Because the polyols are relatively immiscible the resulting foams have a soft-phase glass transition which is ‘smeared’ out over a temperature range controlled by polyol (a) at the low end and by (c) at the high end – ranging e.g. from -30°C to +10°C. This wide glass transition in turn results in a very wide damping frequency range.  A very clever idea that has been copied many times.

Gist”: Use of ester plasticizers in flexible foams

Why it is interesting: According to this invention both the humid aged compression set and the hand ‘feel’ of flexible foams can be improved by incorporating a few percent of a mono- di- tri- or tetra- ester plasticizer in the polyol. In the examples 1 to 4 php of isopropyl myristate does indeed seem to improve the humid aged compression set of an MDI-TDI foam, however not all examples are very convincing.

Gist”: Use of DETDA  in one shot PU-PUA RIM.

Why it is interesting: This is the invention that for the first time allowed the production of large reaction injection moulded (RIM) polyurea articles with a very short demould time. Apart from advances in mixing head design which allowed for fast and accurate mixing and advances in mould design, polyurea RIM was made possible by the development of specific diamine chain extenders.  Bayer found that aromatic diamines containing one alkyl group in o-postion to a first amino group and two alkyl groups in o-position to a second amine group, where at least two of the alkyl groups contain 2 or more carbon atoms, have the correct reactivity for a one shot RIM process when used together with conventional polyether polyols, MDI and catalysts. A preferred example of such a diamine is diethyltoluenediamine (DETDA). The use of DETDA in one shot RIM allowed for the production of  parts up to 10 kg with a demould time of 30 seconds.
