Gist”: TPU is interpenetrated with a thermosetting PU using a solvent

Why it is interesting: According to this invention a conventional TPU can be “toughened” by dipping and  swelling it in a solution containing (about) 20% of a PU-forming composition comprising a polyester polyol, a chain extender, a mixture of pure and polymeric MDI and DBTDL as a catalyst.  The solvent is preferably acetone. The swollen TPU is dried and the PU is cured by heating. It is believed that a TPU-PU interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) is formed.  The invention is targeted at improving the scuff resistance of golf balls. (scuff resistance=resistance against failure of the coating by shear stress).

Solid Cast Polyurethane Elastomers Produced with a Highly Specific “Switchable” Catalyst

Title: POLYISOCYANATE POLYADDITION PRODUCTS, A PROCESS FOR PREPARATION THEREOF AND USE THEREOF

 Number/Link: US2013/303720

Applicant/Assignee: Bayer

Gist”: Use of specific acid-bocked amidines as thermo-latent catalysts for cast elastomers.

Why it is interesting: For the production of solid (non-foamed) cast elastomers it is advantageous to use catalysts which specifically promote the NCO – OH reaction and as little as possible side reactions such as NCO – water, dimerization, trimerization, allophanatization etc. It is also advantageous that the catalyst can be ‘switched on’ at a certain temperature so that elastomer systems with a long open time and short cure time can be formulated. According to the current invention this can be accomplished by using an acid blocked amidine, pref. 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7ene (DBU) blocked with (pref.) isocrotonic acid (Z-2-butenoic acid), together with a zeolite as water scavenger. The system has the added advantage that no heavy metals are used.

Flexible Foams containing Polyurethane Phase Change Gels

Title: Polyurethane Gel-Like Polymers, Methods and Use in Flexible Foams

 Number/Link: US2013/0296449

Applicant/Assignee: PETERSON CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY

Publication date: 07-11-2013

Gist”:   “Polyurethane phase change gels” prepared from polyurethane gels and conventional PCMs are incorporated into polyurethane or latex flexible foams to improve thermal comfort.

Why it is interesting: This application is closely related to the application discussed in the previous post but instead of a plasticized styrenic triblock copolymer, now a polyurethane gel is used. The PU gel is produced from conventional raw materials at low NCO-index (about 60%) together with plasticizers.
