Synergistic fire retardant composition

title:  POLYURETHANE FLAME RETARDANT FORMULATION

number: WO2012116885

publication date:  7 september 2012 (PCT)

applicant/assignee:  Huntsman Polyurethanes

Gist: A PU formulation with a mixture of ammonium polyphosphate and nano metal oxide particles (Mg or Al)

Why it is innovative:  While synergistic effects of fire retardant combinations are known and claimed in many patents, the use of very small metal oxide particles together with APP seems to have a real and significant effect.

“Crocs” that change colour.

title: COLOR CHANGING THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE FOR SHOES

number: WO2012/118980

publication date:  7 september 2012 (PCT)

applicant/assignee:  CROCS inc.

Gist: TPU with colour changing pigments for shoes.

Why it is innovative:  Use of thermochromic and photochromic pigments in PU is known, although I am not sure both together have been used.  In this case both photochromic and thermochromic pigments are claimed, but as far as I read the claims correctly not together, which might have made it even more fun.

Insulation foam with bimodal cell size distribution

Title:  METHOD FOR PRODUCING A POLYURETHANE FOAM AND POLYURETHANE FOAM OBTAINABLE THEREBY

Number: US2012238655

Publication date: 20-9-2012

Applicant/Assignee: Bayer IP

Gist: isocyanate and polyol reacted together with specific surfactante and blowing agent in supercritical state.

Why it is interesting: Heat insulation is a ‘hot’ topic in polyurethane research.  One way to improve insulation is to reduce cell size to nano-scale. This material is interesting because it combines both micron-scale cells as nano-scale cells which is claimed to result in improved insulation as well as mechanical properties.
