Over-Indexed and Crosslinkable Thermoplastic Polyurethane

Title: METHOD FOR MAKING OVER-INDEXED THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE ELASTOMER PRECURSOR AND THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE ELASTOMER MADE FROM THE PRECURSOR

 Patent Number & Link: WO2013/103633

Applicant/Assignee: Nike

Publication date: 11-07-2013

Gist”: A TPU is produced at an NCO index of about 110 comprising an unsaturated chain extender .  The material can be injection moulded and subsequently cured with moisture and free radical polymerization.

Why it is interesting: A thermoplastic PU ‘precursor’ is prepared by reactive extrusion of  a polyol (e.g. a 2000MW polytetramethylene ether glycol), an unsaturated chain extender (e.g. trimethylolpropane monoallyl ether – TMPME), optional additives and MDI at an NCO index of 110 to 115 (preferred). After drying, the resulting pellets can be injection- or compression moulded and then cured by moisture and by heat or UV radiation. The resulting PU-polyurea is claimed to have improved toughness, durability and ‘scuff resistance’ compared to conventional TPUs.  The material appears to have been developed for the golf ball industry.  Nike has filed at least two related ‘golf ball patents’: WO2013/103673 and WO2013/103669.

Self-Healing Polyurethanes, Polyureas and Polyimides

Title: SELF-HEALING POLYMER MATERIALS FOR WIRE INSULATION, POLYIMIDES, FLAT SURFACES, AND INFLATABLE STRUCTURES

 Number/Link: WO2012174325

Applicant/Assignee: NASA

Publication date: 20-12-2012

Gist”: A low molecular weight polyurethane or polyurea material, prepared by reacting IPDI and a polysiloxane diol or diamine in such a way that it flows at about 23°C, shows self-healing properties. Other ’embodiments’ of the invention are concerned with self-healing polyimides containing microcapsules comprising polyimide oligomers (“polyamic acid”).

Why it is interesting: Films of the self-healing PU with a thickness up to 5mm will flow together again after being cut. The material can be laminated between 2 structural layers and used for cable and wire encapsulation e.g.
This is an interesting but very confusing and hard-to-read patent application describing at least 2 different inventions (“non-unity”) and one would expect it to be split-up.

Electricity from sea waves using thermoplastic polyurethane

Title: Use of thermoplastic polyurethanes for converting mechanical energy to electrical energy

Number: EP2509127  and EP2509126

Publication date: 10-10-2012

Applicant/Assignee: Bayer MS

Gist: Use of TPU as an electroactive polymer which is periodically streched and relaxed to produce electricity

Why it is interesting: Bayer claim to use a TPU with a conventional composition -but with a correct hardblock content and morphology- as a dielectric electroactive polymer. Covered with electrodes, electrical charge will appear on both sides of a TPU strip when streched, the charge will flow and result in an electrical current when the polymer is relaxed. The TPU needs the correct stiffness, dielectric constant and electrical breakdown porperties. Both wave- and wind energy harvesting are claimed.
